Entry 3: Differentiating Instruction through Technology

Technology is quickly changing in the way in which students are learning. There are so many technology tools for teachers to use when differentiating instruction in the classroom. According to Shelly, Gunter & Gunter (2012) while differentiating instruction, the teacher will assess each student individually, to come up with instruction based solely on that assessment. Technology can be a wonderful aid to teachers when differentiating instruction in the classroom. Some of the technology tools that can be used that are student centered, connect to the ISTE standards, and impact students achievement are Online libraries, Teaching websites, and Presentation makers.

Online Libraries: Online Libraries are a great tool that can be used in the classroom to differentiate instruction. Online libraries allow students to research at their own pace that is just right for them individually. This technology tool has a great impact on students, because it allows then to research a topic from several resources that align with their individual reading skills. Online libraries are student centered, because it is up to the students to find and gather information. Online libraries connect with the ISTE standards, because according to ISTE (2007) “Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information.” This aligns to the ISTE standards, because it enables students to think critically while researching topics on their own.

Teacher Websites: Teacher websites are a wonderful technology tool that can be used for differentiating instruction in the classroom. Teacher’s websites makes it easy for students to have access to all lessons at all times, and enables them to study on those lessons with ease. Teachers websites support differentiated instruction as it allows all students the ability to study at their own pace and at their own level. Teacher’s websites have a positive impact on student achievement, because they are able to study at their own pace using the website. This technology tool can be connected to the ISTE standards, because according to ISTE (2007) “Students demonstrating a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations”, which means that students are able to use these tools effectively for their success.

Presentation Makers: Presentation makers are wonderful technology tools that can be used to differentiate instruction in the classroom. Some example of presentation makers are PowerPoint, Prezi, and Emaze. Presentations are a great way to get students individually motivated and engaged in their lessons by having them create their own work. Presentations are student centered, because they enable students to focus on their research and show their skills and develop them in a way that will greatly impact their achievement. Presentation makers connect with the ISTE standards, because according to ISTE (2007) “Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and developed innovative products and processes using technology.” Students will use knowledge gained in class along with their own creativity in order to create a presentation of their own.

There are both pros and cons in using technology to differentiate instruction. The biggest and most important pro to using technology to differentiate instruction, is its ability to meet the needs of all students in all lessons. Technology enables students to learn at their own pace and in different ways that suit their personal needs. The cons of using technology to differentiate instruction, is the lack of technology in the classrooms. If there are not enough technology tools for every student in the classroom, like iPads, tablets, etc. then the students might have to share them with one another, and this can cause distractions and lack of concentration. Also teachers need to make sure that they are knowledgeable on the technology tools that they intend to incorporate into their classroom so that it does not become overwhelming or stressful for them.

It is vital that teachers stay up to date on technology in order to for student success. Technology should be used by teachers in order to differentiate instruction and improve learning for students. When using technology tools like online libraries, teacher websites, and presentation makers, teachers can be sure that they are meeting the needs of all students by successfully differentiating instruction.
